This is a Greek word meaning the person who takes the blood from the vein of another person and the process of drawing blood is known as a venipuncture. This may include doctors, nurses, medical laboratory scientist and others involved in research and analysis. Phlebotomist is a person who is trained to draw blood from the vine of a patient for testing them clinically for medical purpose such as screening, donation and etc with the development of microbiology the testing procedure have helped greatly to find out the exact causes of diseases and made it easy for us to prescribed the medicine to say it is a simple process but it is not, we may have to draw blood for different reasons and in different quantities. For example for transfusion it is different than donating. The blood may be drawn for clinical and laboratory testing purposes. It needs proper care and a proper procedure to draw the blood.

There are different practices and rules to be a Phlebotomist and each country has its own rules. In Australia there are many courses offered by educational institutions for Phlebotomy. Mostly the on job training is provided. The minimum qualification of a Phlebotomist is certificate 3 in Pathology or a certificate IV in Pathology. After training and passing the test the candidate is given a certificate and allowed to perform Phlebotomy procedure.

In USA only four states require special state certificate. A Phlebotomist can be certified for the whole country by attending and passing the courses through different organizations. In America it is given a special importance and only certified by six agencies in the country are allowed the work as Phlebotomist. These include American Certification Agency (ACA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), National Center for Competency Testing/Multi-skilled Medical Certification Institute (NCCT/MMCI), National Credentialing Agency (NCA), National Health career Association (NHA), and National Phlebotomy courses Continuing Education (NPCE) only the certified personnel are allowed to work as Phlebotomist. This training includes the written examination and the practical work and the candidate has to pass in both of them.

Now in United Kingdom it is entirely different. They don’t ask for any certification and there is no formal qualification required. Only on job training is required and NHS (national health services) also offers training for formal certification.

A most of the countries there is no special certification required and anybody holding on job training and some experience can work as Phlebotomist. As a matter of fact it is not a very highly technical procedure and some on job training can enable a person to perform this work. However some precautions are require; the environment should be hygienic, the instrument for incision should be sterilized and a proper vein should be punctured for drawing the blood. In all laboratories and medical clinics there is a need of such persons therefore it is important to have many Phlebotomist trained and available for this service. Although it is a very small and simple procedure but highly important in laboratory testing.
